Sri Lanka transport
Colombo Airport to Mirissa
Mirissa is a favourite first beach after a European or East Asian flight: sand, seafood, and boats. The drive is longer than Galle but still a same-day arrival.
Time
3–4 hours
Distance
About 180 km
Best for
South-coast beach start, whale watching
Whale-watching boats often leave early. If that is why you came, land the day before—not at 11 p.m. hoping for a 6 a.m. boat. A private van helps if you have surfboards or a group.
Weligama is 15 minutes west if you prefer a quieter bay; add the real hotel town on the map so hosts price the correct drop.
Before you go
- November–April is the usual whale season; confirm boats locally, they cancel in swell.
- From Mirissa you can continue east to Yala or west back through Galle Fort.
